Helping riders identify when external pressure does not align with their personal goals and/or abilities is what we call Challenge by Choice. Being a fast rider does not mean you always want to ride fast. Being a timid rider does not mean you aren't able to manage the risk of technical trails. Being an exceptional rider does not mean you want to pursue the podium. A new rider should ease in or dive in, based on their needs and desires. Can doesn't always mean should and can't doesn't always mean won't. This is Challenge by Choice, and it is one of the many life skills we teach that extends beyond the trail.
